Margaret Hamburg ’83 was named the new U.S. Food and Drug Administration commissioner in May 2009.

David Blumenthal’74 was named the national coordinator for health information technology for the Obama Administration in April 2009.

Yvette Roubideaux ’89 was named as the Obama Administration’s new director of the Indian Health Service in March 2009. She has conducted extensive research on Native American health issues and is a member of the Rosebud Sioux tribe.

Donald Goldman’69 was appointed to the Biological Advisory Board of BioNeutral Group, Inc., in April 2009. He is a professor of epidemiology at Harvard Medical School and a professor of immunology and infectious diseases and epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health.

Samuel L. Stanley, Jr. ’80 is the newly elected president of Stony Brook University, effective July 1, 2009. He was previously the vice chancellor of research at Washington University and the director of Midwest Regional Center for Excellence for Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases Research.

Alfred Sommer ’67 was elected chair of the board of the Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting biomedical research. Sommer is dean emeritus and an epidemiology professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

John Kelly ’79 was named chief medical officer of Lifeclinic International, the world’s leading manufacturer and distributor of automated blood pressure monitors and health testing stations.

Richard Chin ’94 was appointed chief executive officer of The Institute for OneWorld Health, the U.S.-based nonprofit pharmaceutical company that develops drugs for people with neglected infectious diseases in the developing world.

Sara Bolton ’91 was elected to serve a three-year term as a council member for the Massachusetts Psychiatric Society. She is currently the medical director of the Clinical Evaluation Center at McLean Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts.

Carmen Puliafito ’77 was appointed by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to the Independent Citizens Oversight Committee of the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine, a state agency that supports and advances stem cell research. Puliafito is also dean of the University of California’s Keck School of Medicine.

Mark Goldberg’80, senior vice president of Clinical Research at Genzyme and a leading medical oncologist and hematologist, was appointed to Synageva BioPharma’s Board of Directors.

Thomas Bodenheimer ’65 was named to the Institute of Medicine in October 2008. He is a professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine and director of the Center for Excellence in Primary Care at the University of California, San Francisco.

Deborah Prothrow-Stith ’79 joined the Boston, Massachusetts, office of Spencer Stuart, one of the word’s leading executive search consulting firms. She will specialize in recruiting senior health care services executives as a member of the firm’s Life Sciences Practice.

Howard Rubenstein ’57 had his translation of Jean Racine’s play Britannicus performed at the Compass Theatre in San Diego, California, from October 16 to November 23, 2008.

Chi-Yuan Hsu ’93 has been named chief of the Division of Nephrology in Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. Hsu had been the interim division chief for the past academic year.

Jeffrey Guy ’92, an assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at the University of South Carolina Sports Medicine Center, has been invited to join the 2008 Olympics Medical Team.

Jeffrey Jonas ’79 has been appointed senior vice president of research and development of Shire Limited’s Specialty Pharmaceuticals business. Jonas will be responsible for establishing the strategic direction of Shire Specialty Pharmaceuticals’ new product pipeline, including achievement of R&D milestones.

Michael G. House ’99 has been appointed assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at the Indiana University School of Medicine.

Randall S. Jotte ’87, a Republican, is one of four candidates campaigning for a seat in the Missouri House of Representatives for the 91st District leading to the August 5, 2008, primary. Jotte works as an emergency physician at Barnes–Jewish Hospital and is an associate professor of emergency medicine at Washington University.

Eve Higginbotham ’79 has been elected as a new member of the Harvard Board of Overseers. She is the dean of the Morehouse School of Medicine.

David Rutlen ’73 has been appointed chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.

Stephen Blacklow ’88 has been appointed to the Scientific Advisory Board of Raptor Pharmaceuticals Corp., a biopharmaceutical company based in Novato, California.

Anthony Patriarco ’84 has been elected to the Board of Directors of EurOmax Resources Limited, a Vancouver, Canada–based minerals exploration company.

Alik Farber ’91 was named chief of vascular surgery at Boston Medical Center. He also serves as an associate professor of surgery at Boston University School of Medicine.

Debra Yu ’92 has been appointed vice president of strategy of a Shanghai, China–based pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device outsourcing company, WuXi PharmaTech.

Harold J. Burstein ’90 has been appointed the new editor-in-chief of the Journal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network.

Elizabeth Klerman ’86 has been appointed associate team leader for the Human Factors and Performance Team of the National Space Biomedical Research Institute, a consortium of institutions studying the health risks related to long-duration space flight. Klerman is an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and an associate physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Neil Powe ’80 has been elected to the American Board of Internal Medicine’s Board of Directors, which sets the standards and certifies physicians practicing in internal medicine and its subspecialties who possess the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to provide high-quality care.

Richard Fisher ’70 has been appointed senior associate dean for clinical affairs and director of the University of Rochester Medical Faculty Group, the largest medical practice in Rochester, New York.

Craig Youke ’74, a retired neurosurgeon, provided an inspiring history lesson on freedom through the eyes of his family to a group of newly naturalized U.S. citizens in Topeka, Kansas, recently.

Lincoln Chen ’68, founder of Harvard University’s Global Equity Initiative, moderated an event at the JFK Library on June 7, 2008, where 2006 Nobel Peace Laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the founder of Grameen Bank and the founding father of the microfinance movement, discussed eliminating poverty in the United States.

Daniel Podolsky ’78 was named as the new president of UT Southwestern Medical Center of Dallas.

Peter Slavin ’84 has been elected to the MIT Corporation Board of Trustees. He is also president of Massachusetts General Hospital and professor of health care policy at Harvard Medical School.

James Rothman, PhD ’76 was recently appointed chairman of the Yale School of Medicine’s Department of Cell Biology.

Eric Aguiar ’89, a partner at Thomas, McNerney and Partners in Stamford, Connecticut, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of Amarin Corporation, a London-based biopharmaceutical company focused on improving the lives of patients with cardiovascular and central nervous system diseases.

The Family Medicine Institute, an Augusta, Maine, family practice founded by Alexander McPhedran ’54 recently celebrated 35 years of service.

Allison Bryant ’98 was recently appointed assistant adjunct professor at the University of San Francisco Medical School’s Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences.

Robert H. Brown ’75 has been appointed chair of neurology at UMass Medical School and UMass Memorial Medical Center.

Donald Oken ’49, who began his bachelor’s degree program at Syracuse University 64 years ago when he was 16, received his bachelor’s degree in biology and participated in the university’s commencement ceremony on May 11, 2008.

Mark Girard ’86 is the new president of the medical staff at North Shore Medical Center in Salem. He was elected by his fellow 650 physicians who work at the center’s main facilities: Salem Hospital and North Shore Children’s Hospital in Salem, Union Hospital in Lynn, the North Shore Cancer Center in Peabody, and the North Shore Women’s Health Center in Danvers.

Robert A. Star ’80 has been named director of the Division of Kidney, Urologic, and Hematologic Diseases at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

Andrew Freese ’90 has joined Brandywine Hospital in Coatesville, Pennsylvania, as medical director of neurosurgery.

Kenneth S. Robinson ’79 has been appointed to the board of directors of GTx, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee.

Anthony Patriarco ’84 was recently elected to the board of directors of Adriana Resources Inc., a mineral exploration and development company located in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Jay Schnitzer ’83 will serve as vice president and associate chief medical officer of Boston Scientific Corporation. In his new role, Schnitzer will be responsible for leading the medical input process for the company’s endosurgery, neurovascular, and neuromodulation businesses.

Frank M. Torti ’73 has been appointed principal deputy commissioner and first chief scientist to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The new chief scientist position was created from the Food and Drug Administration Amendments Act of 2007.

Ralph de la Torre ’92 has been appointed CEO of Caritas Christi Health Care, the hospital system that the Archdiocese of Boston owns.

Edward J. Wing ’71 has been chosen the new dean of medicine and biological sciences at Brown University.
